You Can Do Hard Things: Tackling Challenges Head On with Warrioress

When we first moved onto the farm, I knew we had a big task ahead. The farmhouse needed a full renovation, as did a number of areas on the land. The challenge presented itself with fangs at times, but I’d like to think we have done a good job so far.

As a Transformational Life Coach, I like to look at the back end of these things – the processes we go through when faced with challenges. Something I’ve noticed when analysing my own patterns is that there is more than one way to skin a cat, as it were. I have friends who would just dive in, and others who would do a backwards analysis before even starting the job.

So much work to do…

Our approach was a bit of a mix, but the reflections have given me some really great strategies for breaking down processes so you can do the hard things. So here it is, my ‘doing the hard stuff’ crib sheet!

Step 1: Remember that this isn’t the first hard thing you’ve ever done

I guarantee that you have done hard stuff before, and if you haven’t, you aren’t thinking hard enough. You’ve made decisions. You’ve learned new skills. You overcame every obstacle so far – and that you are alive is proof that you can overcome challenges, and live to continue to do so.

Step 2: Start at the end result and work backwards… before you start

Imagine the end goal. What does it look like? How does it feel?

Now imagine the process. What do you need? Do you have all the tools and equipment? Do you have the skills? Do you have the brain space to handle this? How can you make this work? If you don’t have everything you need, where can you get it? Do you need a box of screws, or an hour’s rousing pep talk from your friendly neighbourhood transformational life coach?

Step 3: Don’t fear the unexpected

In fact, you should EXPECT the unexpected. See challenges and be ready to eat them for breakfast. Approach obstacles with the wisdom of Queen, and the Get It Done energy of the Warrioress. Prepare for things to go off track, and have contingency plans where reasonably practical.

A great example would be if your hard thing is dating – have an exit strategy. Arrive early and befriend the bartender. Have a friend call at an agreed time and have a safe word in case you need an extraction. Leave information with a trusted friend or relative about where you are going and with whom.

Step 4: Pause

If at any point, the hard thing seems insurmountable, Pause. Take a moment. Walk away. Breathe. Seek counsel. Get some advice from a friend, from Youtube or a professional should the situation need it.

Step 5: Celebrate the small wins

For every step of progress you make, celebrate! Get your victory dance on. Play your happy song and boogie your butt off for a minute, and remember, you CAN do the hard things!
