Why You Are Uncomfortable with Sorceress and What you Can Do About It

From talking to other people within the One of Many community, I’ve found that Sorceress is the PowerType with which many women have the most difficulty in embracing. Today I take a look at why this might be, and what we can do to get more comfortable with the Sorceress.

What do we think of when we think of a sorceress?

For me, when I think of a Sorceress, I think of an evil enchantress, someone who uses her magic to harm the beautiful princess. Perhaps I’ve watched too much Disney with my daughter. Generally, the connotation is one of magic, and if we look at how magic has been viewed in the last, it throws up some uncomfortable feelings.

If you are religious, and depending on just how pious you are, the idea of magic may feel satanic in nature, whereas others may see it as comedy and ‘not something to be taking seriously.’

But that is not what the Sorceress is about…

If we look at the etymology, the word Sorceress comes from the Latin sortiārius, meaning “person who casts lots”. This was traditionally in reference to ‘someone who tells fortunes’.

However, before the negative connotations became attached to the word, a sorcerer was simply ‘one connected to the source of fate or fortune’. Within One of Many, we therefore consider the Sorceress as our connection to a higher power, or Source, whatever we view that is.

Your connection to Source may be your faith in God or Allah, Jehovah or Yahweh, Waheguru, or whatever you call him. But for those who are atheist or agnostic, you may have another way of connecting to Source. For you, Source may be Mother Earth, nature, or even just your ‘trust in the universe’ if you are a keen practitioner of manifestation.

The characteristics of the Sorceress are the important part.

The Sorceress is the element of us that has faith. Faith that God, or the universe will come through for us, or simply the faith that everything will be OK when it feels like the world is on fire.

The Sorceress is the feeling of connection, the bringer of magic and miracles, working with the power of the world that cannot be held in the hands.

The Sorceress is the part of us that enjoys ritual, whether it is worship, prayer, or the ritual of running a luxurious bath at the end of the day.

The Sorceress is that part of you that makes difficult decisions by, as Glennon Doyle says, ‘feel(ing) for the knowing’ – feeling into that part of you that knows what to do based on instincts and intuition.

You can find Sorceress in your everyday life.

Sorceress shows up when your drain is blocked and you notice your neighbour has a plumber in, doing some work, and his van parks outside your window.

Sometimes, she is the leaflet for the local takeaway that gets delivered just as you finish work and are too tired to cook.

She hides in the everyday stuff, all those happy coincidences, all those moments where you think ‘oh that was lucky!’. She is your Source’s way of saying ‘I have your back’.
